Thank-you Brexit!

If not for you, yesterday would have felt a whole lot worse. I heard the news in the morning and I was almost expecting it. There were no tears. There was no 20 minutes sat in silence, trying to comprehend what the hell was going on. There was no sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I got the kids ready for school, while having a debate about it with The Photographer (and responding to a few WhatsApp messages), and my day went on. As usual.

Perhaps it was his fully scripted, over-diluted yet teeth-achingly saccharined up, very un-Trumplike victory speech. Perhaps it was the fact that it is all happening thousands of miles away. I don’t know exactly. I don’t want to think that I have lost my faith in humankind, cos I don’t think I have. But, as controversial as it may sound, I do think that Trump needed to happen. Perhaps America, via this pathetic excuse for a man, needs to be given a chance to eff up, on a grand scale, so that we can, once and for all, put a line under him and everything that he stands for. So that there will be no going back to the fear and hatred that he represents.

It brought to mind a saying from my childhood, one that my parents would often use to heighten my shame after a misdeed – “You see?”, they would say, “those who cannot hear, must feel”. For those of you who may not be familiar with this concept, it is akin to the whole “if you play with fire, you’re gonna get burned” thing. The world played with fire when it even entertained a Trump character as a presidential candidate. As a result, there will be pain. God willing, it will be relatively short-term. But, I am hopeful that we will learn from this and, once we have healed, we will never repeat it…at least not in my lifetime…
